HYATTSVILLE, MD (February 12, 2009) – Nonprofit community developer the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation (CDC) in partnership with the award-winning multifamily development firm Post Properties, Inc. (NYSE: PPS) has concluded its open, juried sculpture competition. Entries were drawn from a nationally based pool of artists from across the country. The selection panel reviewed the design submissions and past works from eight qualifying sculptors. Alan Binstock’s concept “Pilgrim’s Quandary” edged out several extremely strong design proposals. The engineering, design refinements, and fabrication of the sculpture are now underway. At nearly 2000 lbs, and up to 17-feet high, this major sculpture’s installation is expected before the end of April.

Pilgrim's Quandary

Selection panelist Martin Howle, a Post Properties executive and architect expressed his satisfaction with the selection process and in the end said Post Properties was pleased that the jury selected a local artist.

Pilgrim’s Quandary” manifests its themes as a strong and totemic emblem, and is to be fabricated from stainless steel, silicon bronze and glass. The artwork will feature a glass orb at the core of a 13-foot diameter shield-form that is supported by curving cross-braced stainless steel rods. The sculpture will reside in a prominent position on the pedestrian plaza just to the south of the Post Park® Apartments, along East-West Highway, complementing and enhancing the architecture’s urban design.

Mr. Binstock, a popular local sculptor, yogi, and NASA architect has been reviewed and featured in the Washington Post, Sculpture Magazine, and at The American Center for Physics for his contemplative works in stone, glass, and steel. His concept, “Pilgrim’s Quandary”, is the latest in his intense, reflective body of work. Other competition finalists include Barron Naegel, Carl Wright, Don Lawler, Tim Tate, Matt Kargol, Michael Szabo, and Mark Castator.

Post Park is a transit-oriented development and its arrival in Hyattsville reflects the City’s revitalization goals of building upon the overlooked core strengths and fundamental character at the heart of this Prince George’s County inner-ring community. In addition to their Public Art partnership, Post demonstrated a commitment to the local environment when the Company undertook a much-needed storm water mitigation project as part of its 6.8-acre development, which restored streambeds that control runoff to the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. “Post Properties’ approach to project development is forward-thinking, sensitive to the community’s needs, and fits neatly with our community development approach of using locally-based assets to improve development outcomes,” according to Stuart Eisenberg, Executive Director of the Hyattsville CDC.

I like to document life. messes and drips and grumpy faces. I don't do much posing and I love natural light. I'm pretty hands off.
